Had Better/ Would rather / Prefer

Had better (θα ήταν καλύτερα να...)

Εκφράζει συμβουλή για το τι είναι σωστό να γίνει.

  • Had better + present bare infinitive = αναφορά στο παρόν και στο μέλλον
I had better leave early to catch the bus

  • Had better + perfect bare infinitive = αναφορά στο παρελθόν
I had better have left earlier yesterday morning to catch the bus




Would rather (= would prefer to...) Θα προτιμούσα να...
 
Εκφράζει προτίμηση.  
 
 
1. Σε Ταυτοπροσωπία
 
α) Would rather + present bare infinitive = αναφορά στο παρόν και στο μέλλον
 
I would rather live in a small city
 
β) Would rather + perfect bare infinitive = αναφορά στο παρελθόν
 
I would rather not have moved in a small village.
 
γ) Would rather + bare infinitive + than (+ bare infinitive)  
 
I would rather watch a comedy than a thriller.
I would rather have taken the bus than have taken the bicycle.
 
 
2. Σε Ετεροπροσωπία
 
α) Would rather + past tense = Παρόν / Μελλον
 
I would rather Sam stayed with us tonight than...
 
 
β) Would rather + past perfect = Παρελθόν
 
I would rather Bob never had taken his fathers car yesterday night,
 
 
 
 
Prefer
 
a) I prefer playing tennis to playing golf.
    love/like
 
b) I prefer tennis to golf
 
c) I prefer to play tennis rather than (play) golf.
 
d) I would prefer to play tennis rather than (play) golf.
would like / would love
