ΧΡΗΣΕΙΣ

1.
Για κάτι που έγινε στο παρελθόν και θέλω να δώσω έμφαση στη διάρκει της πράξης.

I was sleeping all night long.

2.
Για να περιγράψουμε την ατμόσφαιρα, το σκηνικό μιας ιστορίας ή μιας αφήγησης ΠΡΙΝ μπούμε στην κύρια πλοκή της. Πριν μπούμε στο ψητό.

The sun was shining and the birds were singing. John was driving the old truck and he was smiling. He was singing a happy song when suddenly he crushed onto a huge tree. 

3.
Για να περιγράψουμε μια παρελθοντική πράξη που γινόταν πολύ ώρα και διεκόπη από μιά άλλη πράξη μικρότερης διάρκειας. 

I was taking a bath when the telephone rang.

4.
Για να περιγράψουμε δυο παρελθοντικές πράξεις που γίνονταν ταυτόχρονα...

We were having a music lesson while/as our mum was cooking in the kitchen.


ΝΟΤΕ:
When + past simple
While/as + past continuous

When you swept I was taking a bath.
While you were swiping I was taking a bath.
You were swiping as I was taking a bath.


5. Είναι το μέλον του παρελθόντος.
He was busy packing because he was leaving that night.
