So that ( =in order that) In this case you generally need to use a modal.

- Emma has booked a first class ticket so that she can travel in comfort.
+ could / would (παρελθόν)
- Emma booked a first class ticket so that she could travel in comfort.

to prevent + noun / pronoun + (from) + -ing
- She covered the sofa with a sheet to prevent it from getting dirty.
to avoid + -ing / noun
- They set off early in the morning to avoid getting stuck in the traffic
- They set off early in the morning to avoid the traffic.
