to-infinitive:

• She went shopping to look for some new clothes.

In order to-infinitive / so as to-infinitive

• He did a postgraduate course in order / so as to widen his knowledge of international politics.

 

NOTE: Σε αρνητική πρόταση προσθέτουμε not μπροστά από to-infinitive.

• He wrote the number down in order not / so as not to forget it.

So that ( =in order that)  In this case you generally need to use a modal.

 

+ can / will (παρόν - μέλλον)

• Emma has booked a first class ticket so that she can travel in comfort.

 

 

+ could / would (παρελθόν)

• Emma booked a first class ticket so that she could travel in comfort.

In case

 

+ verb in present tense (παρόν - μελλον)

• Take your credit card in case you run out of cash.
• Take your house key in case I have gone out when you come back.

 

+ verb in past tense (παρελθόν)

• He took his credit card in case he ran out of cash.

 

NOTE: never with will or would

+ ing (γενικό σκοπό για τον οποίο χρησιμοποιούμε ένα αντικείμενο)

• You can use that spade for digging.

Negative purpose

 

to prevent + noun / pronoun + (from) + -ing

 

• She covered the sofa with a sheet to prevent it from getting dirty.

 

 

to avoid + -ing / noun

 

• They set off early in the morning to avoid getting stuck in the traffic
• They set off early in the morning to avoid the traffic.
